Simon Middleton will talk about the changing conceptions of money in England, France, and America from1690 to 1781

In this lecture for the Bidwell House Museum, Simon Middleton considers changing attitudes towards money and the social and political consequences after the South Sea and Mississippi Bubbles and up through the American Revolution.

Simon Middleton teaches at the College of William & Mary and writes on work and politics, law and debt, and latterly on the history of money in the 17th and 18th century middle colonies, New York and Pennsylvania. For the last year he has been writing lectures commissioned by the online content producer, Great Courses. The lectures offer a history of money from 3000 BCE to the present and will be available on Amazon prime, audible and other platforms from November 2025.
