Did George Washington Wear Lace?

July 15, 2023 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Free
Learn about lace in Colonial America.

One of the themes for the Bidwell House Museum 2023 season is historic textiles and in that spirit we are excited to have Bev Wolov present her talk on the history of lace in early America.

Did George Washington Wear Lace? The question is simple. However, the answer is a complex tale of a nation inventing itself. Join Beverly Wolov, lace historian, for a presentation rich with images and stories and discover how lace became imbedded in early American material culture.

Wolov has an M.A. in the History of Decorative Arts from the Smithsonian/Corcoran College of Art and Design. Her background is in fashion history, specializing in lace and material culture. Wolov photographs and identifies lace for museums, and has worked extensively with the Smithsonian National Museum of American History and Mount Vernon, among others.

This lecture will be held at the Bidwell House Museum. This will be an in-person lecture, with the option to also watch a livestream via Zoom. All Zoom participants will receive a link to access the lecture 1-2 days in advance. Attendance will be limited to 20 people in-person at the Museum and pre-registration for all attendees is required.
