Needlework

Workshop

Those who attended Mary Kate Jordan’s Keepsake Embroidery Workshop in the summer of 1999 got a first hand experience and an understanding of just what went into conquering those needlework patterns. Participants studied the textiles in the Bidwell House exhibit of needlework from the collection and learned the various stitch patterns that went into making these beautiful pieces.
Using patterns created by Mary Kate, based on the samplers in The Bidwell House collection, workshop attendees used either cross stitch or Deerfield embroidery to create their own pieces. Both the peacocks and the flowers are images in the collection, but this sampler was designed and stitched by Mary Kate. Sampler based on designs in the collection
Mary Kate, a member of the Embroiderers' Guild of America, has taught workshops at Hancock Shaker Village, teaches independently  and at the Interlaken School of Art.
Interestingly, given the association of samplers with young girls, Mary Kate has also taught needle arts to a group of home schooled children. You may email her for more information. Additionally, Mary Kate is a member of the Monterey Piecemakers and designed the Deerfield embroidery that was such a stunning part of the Stars in the Garden quilt.
