Monterey Piece Makers

Seen here uncharacteristically not working, but as usual having great fun, are the Monterey Piece Makers, with the exception of Anita Carol Weldon, who was conducting a tour pf the museum, and Barbara Tryon  who took the celebratory photograph at The Bidwell House. The occasion was a late summer lunch to mark the successful completion of the Stars in the Garden Quilt, raffled to benefit the museum.

Carol Zarlin, a weekender from Long Island and retired quilt teacher, first suggested the idea of a quilt to commemorate Monterey's sesquicentennial. Word spread and a small group gathered to share ideas. We quickly decided to make a wall hanging and space constraints in the town hall determined the overall size.

The distinctive and decorative town seal lent itself to a folk-art interpretation in appliqué and became a natural centerpiece worked on by all.

Jan Emmons is credited with the idea of surrounding it with silhouettes of animals of the area - domestic and wild - which she drew. Carol appliquéd them by machine, as she did the lettering - a heroic task - and created the barns for the corners. The assembled piece was passed from person to person to be hand-quilted and the finished product was handed over as part of the mid-summer anniversary celebrations on a rainy Sunday.
Having had such fun making that quilt, we found another project, an even more ambitious one - a queen-sized quilt to be raffled to benefit the Monterey Meeting House Capital Campaign. There had been no space for flowers in the previous quilt, so that became the central theme. Many of the members revealed artistic talents and were able to create drawings to form the templates. One fun morning was spent coloring them in so that we could get an idea of fabric needs.
Many of us enjoyed jaunts to Greenfield and Hudson in search of fabrics (and a good lunch) as well as many expeditions to The Pumpkin Patch in Lee. The quilt raised $3,457 and was won by long-time summer residents Carole Adele Weitz and her daughter, Chelsea.

Next we tackled another ambitious project, another queen sized quilt, hand pieced, embroidered and quilted, to benefit The Bidwell House Museum. Click on Stars in the Garden to see this quilt.
