Located in a plot across from the vegetable garden is the heirloom herb garden. In the 18th and early 19th centuries, herb gardens were the source for medicines, cosmetics, dyes, and food seasonings. Herb gardens were often located near the kitchen garden. They were considered utilitarian and, therefore, rarely located in the front of the house. In The Bidwell House herb garden you will find examples of all these types of usable herbs. | ||
