Mass. Quilt Documentation #2073 Bidwell acquisition # 208001

Estimated to have been made around 1840.

Printed chintz quilt on a bed in the museum.

Whole-cloth bed quilt 103 1/2" x 90" made from printed, glazed, multi-colored cotton chintz . The batting is thin cotton and the backing is  made from five pieces of plain cotton. The quilt is finished with a front to back applied binding of coarse linen weave cotton.

Hand quilted at 7 - 8 stitches to the inch in a grid and diamond motif with 2 - 21/2 inches betwwen the lines. Unfortunately, though it is considered to be in good condition for its age, the quilt has shattered around the center fold lines and there is some staining.
