Rust Whole Cloth Quilt

Massachusetts Quilt Documentation #2069

Estimated to have been made between 1810 and 1840, this rust colored, plain-woven woolen whole-cloth quilt is 106" wide by 104 1/2" long with cut out corners. The backing is constructed from five pieces of white fabric with a cotton warp and wool weft. The thin batting is wool and the quilt has a knife edge finish.  The quilt is structurally sound and in very good condition with some minor stains on the back and a few well-darned holes

A center diamond trellis is quilted at 9 stitches to the inch, comprising alternate blocks of 7 straight lines with blocks with 4 semi-circles.

Around this is a double border of a wonderful floral design and the inside corner of the cut out is quilted with a feathered circle.

Below gives another representation of this border with the color distorted to show the intricacy of the quilting design.
