Estimated to have been made
between 1800 and 1840, this brick red, woolen whole-cloth quilt is 104
1/2" wide by 105" long with cut out corners that have a rounded inside
edge to fit around a bed post.. The backing is cream-colored, un-dyed
wool; he batting is wool and the quilt is bound with the same fabric as
the top on the straight grain. The quilt is structurally sound and
in very good condition with some minor stains on the back and a few
well-darned holes |
Quilting, at 6
stitches to the inch, in the center of the quilt that rests on the top of
the bed is a trellis pattern formed from triple lines, with alternating
hearts and leaf motifs within the diamonds formed by the trellis. (See

A scrolling
border on the sides and foot of the quilt incorporates stylized flowers
and leaves backed by closely quilted parallel lines. (See detail below) |
