Butternut Quilt

Mass.Quilt Documentation #2063. Bidwell accession # 208008

Believed to have been made between 1820 and 1850, this quilt is made from 32 1/4" widths of butternut plain woven wool and reads as dark brown with purple overtones. It is backed with three pieces of golden yellow cotton warp and wool weft cloth, has a thin batting and a knife edge finish.

In fair to good condition, there are scattered abrasions on the back that have caused frayed areas and there are some small holes on the front. It is quilted at 7 stitches to the inch with five undulating feather vines arranged vertically and parallel lines approximately 3/4" apart. The quilt is 94" wide by 104 1/2" long.
