Indigo whole cloth quilt

Mass. Quilt Documentation #2061 Bidwell acquisition # 208006

This is a whole cloth quilt made from 19 1/2" widths of plain woven, glazed, indigo colored worsted.. It is backed with a golden yellow fabric comprising a cotton warp and wool weft that was probably home spun.  It is filled with a thin wool batting and finished with a knife edge. Estimated to have been made between 1800 and 1825, the quilt is 86" x 89 1/4".

The quilting at 7 to 9 stitches to the inch uses dark blue plied thread, possibly cotton. The design is of undulating stylized floral vines creating a border on all four sides. There is a central floral motif framed with more undulating vines. The quilt is in very good condition with some minor holes.
