Patterned Cotton Quilt

Estimated to have been made between 1810 and 1840

Printed early 18thc quilt on a bed in the museum.

Whole-cloth bed quilt 95 1/2" x 101 1/2" made from a printed pattern repeat block print comprising a leafy branch in 15,  3/4" wide vertical stripes. Fabric is a multi-colored, glazed cotton print in white, tan, brown and a green, printed yellow over blue. The batting is probably wool and the backing, which has a brown stain, is  made from four pieces of cotton.

Hand quilted at 8 stitches to the inch in a block pattern  (see below) and bound with straight-applied tape on three sides and knife edge on the top side.

In very good condition, the quilt shows some fading and has a brown stain on the reverse, seen above left.
