Olive Green Whole Cloth Quilt

Massachusetts Quilt Documentation #2056

Olive green whole cloth bed quilt (Doc. # 2056) Estimated to have been made between 1790 and 1825. 92" wide by 103" long, with cut out corners, made from plain woven wool, hand quilted at 6 or 7 stitches per inch.

It has a knife edge binding and thin wool batting backed by three pieces of un-dyed wool. The quilt is structurally sound and in excellent condition. However, it was damaged and repaired. Numerous holes were beautifully darned with matching yarn on both the back and the front.

The quilting pattern is a center of  clamshell surrounded on all four sides with a double border; the inner border being undulating continuous feathers, the outer border a reverse-curved, stylized  floral vine. (See detail below)
